What is an Oil Cleanser? Who Should Use It? Who Shouldn't?

Oil cleansers have been quite the talk of the town lately along with double cleansing.  So let me break it down, so you can understand what an oil cleanser is and who can use one.  The quick answer to the latter question is anyone can use an oil cleanser. More on this….

Oil cleansers are usually enzyme based but not always.  Some oil cleansers are truly “oily” and have a lot of slip, which I enjoy.  This will allow you to glide easy with the fingertips.  Other oil cleansers are more of a “dry” oil. With dry oil cleansers you may need to work into the skin a little more.

When you're cleansing with an oil cleanser this is always going to be your first cleanse or pre cleanse.  This is where we get into the Double Cleanse.  The oil cleaner will break down all the makeup, spf, debris and impurities that you will have on your face.  I recommend a firm but feathery touch when massaging it into the skin (2-3 minutes).  Then use your second cleanser.

This can be your treatment cleanser that may contain Glycolic, Salicylic or even jojoba beads.  Since you've already cleansed once the second cleanse will reach the skin and do its job without having to break through all the makeup or spf.  The same goes for yout treatment products, since you've cleansed so well they won't have to work as hard to get to your skin.

Now let's talk about why anyone can use an oil cleanser. So think back to Chemistry 101, I know scary right.  But remember a like compound dissolves or cancels out another like compound.  Sooooo OIL dissolves OIL! Yes it's true, if you're oily or acneic you can use an oil cleanser as your pre cleanse. In fact you should be using one and we recommend one!

Of course normal to dry skin types can use oil cleansers as well.  Let's face it these lucky peeps can pretty much use any skincare products.  So I won't go into depth for them.  They will get the same benefits as far as breaking down makeup and debris.  Dry types love the hydration that instantly happens when you apply and massage in the oil cleanser.

I hope this clarified what an oil cleanser is and why you should be using one. We’ll see you in the spa!
