When should I wear SPF?

Recently, we have been getting a lot of inquiries about when you should wear sunscreen. The plain and simple answer to this is ALWAYS.

Sunscreen is your number one product to protect you from aging skin.

We always say it’s easier to prevent sun damage than it is to treat it. Sun damage can take many years and services/products to treat it and it can still even be seen after. This is why it is important to wear sunscreen everyday.

You heard that right, everyday. Even on the days that it is cloudy, raining, or when there is an overcast.

To truly understand why sunscreen should be worn everyday you need to know how sun exposure affects your skin.

There is melanin all in your body; it is what controls the pigmentation of your skin and hair.

Someone who has fair skin doesn’t have as much melanin in their skin so they have less protection against the sun.

Someone who has a darker skin tone has more melanin in their skin making them less likely to burn, but if they have overexposure to UVA/B rays without any protection sun damage can still occur.

When you are exposed to UV rays the melanin in your skin tries to protect you by producing melanin faster.

Your melanin can only protect you so much so it’s best to also protect yourself with sunscreen to prevent sun damage.

Sun damage is caused by too much exposure to UVA or UVB rays.

Regardless of the weather, you should always protect yourself from the sun even if it isn’t visible.

It’s important to get to know the UV index scale so you know the effects it can have on your skin. Below is a graph that easily depicts how quickly the sun affects your skin based on exposure time.

Anytime the UV index is at a 5 or above you should be wearing sunscreen and reapplying it to protect your skin from sun damage.

Between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM the sun’s rays are the strongest so sunscreen should always be worn during these hours regardless of the season.

It’s always good to apply sunscreen daily regardless of the UV index because like I said earlier it is easier to prevent sun damage than it is to treat it.

Even on the days there is rain or an overcast, UVA/B rays can still reach you and cause pre-maturing aging to your skin through the sun exposure.

Go check your sunscreen. Is it at least a 30? If not, run to the store and get one that is! To fully protect you from UVA/B rays your sunscreen should be at least a 30.

Now that you have some background knowledge on how sun exposure affects your skin I’m hoping you put your sunscreen on daily regardless of the weather outside.
