How to Prep Your Skin for a Microdermabrasion Treatment

So, you want to invest in a microdermabrasion treatment but you don’t know how to properly prep your skin for the service. No worries! Microdermabrasion prep is simple and easy. The prep necessary for a microdermabrasion treatment can vary on your skin type. For someone with very dry skin we recommend to first find the root of what’s causing your skin to become dehydrated and then start a skincare regimen to pump hydration into your skin. Once your skin is brought back to life and newly hydrated it’s the perfect time to receive your microdermabrasion treatment! If you are someone who has an oily skin type we recommend for you to  get a good assessment of your skin barrier and see if there’s anything we can do to decrease the amount of oil your skin is producing. Although some people naturally have an oily skin type, an at home skincare regimen fit for your skin can help decrease the amount of oil you produce.

You can totally receive a microdermabrasion treatment if you haven’t received any other professional spa services or do not follow a professional skin care regimen although in order to get your best results it’s highly recommended for your skin to be properly prepped and ready for the treatment. If microdermabrasion is performed on skin that’s not quite prepped and ready the machine may not be able to fight through what lays on top of your skin ultimately stopping the device from doing what it’s made to do. Safely exfoliating your skin at home with professional at home skin care products before coming in for your treatment will insure you will get the FULL benefit of the treatment that you’re receiving. Who doesn’t want that?!

Before coming in for your microdermabrasion treatment we also recommend stopping any Retin-A medication a week prior. Retin-A topicals can thin the skin's barrier posing heavy exfoliation of the skin, a risk such as waxing, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion. Lastly, we recommend limiting your sun exposure the days leading up to your microdermabrasion treatment. Your skin would not approve of the treatment on sunburn skin!

If you have any further questions regarding how to prep your skin for your microdermabrasion treatment or if you’re a good candidate for the service, we are happy to help here at The Peoria Beach House Spa!
